A cranberry mocktail over ice in a rocks glass, garnished with rosemary, fresh cranberries and an orange wheel

A cranberry mocktail is tart, bright and the color of the holidays. Cranberry juice and fresh orange carry it. A rosemary syrup gives it a little sweetness and the smell of the season. A non-alcoholic gin alternative adds the botanical backbone of a real cocktail, and ginger beer on top gives it a lift.

Use 100% cranberry juice for a tart, grown-up drink, or cranberry juice cocktail for a sweeter one. Make the syrup ahead and the drink takes five minutes. Hosting? See the pitcher version below, or our Thanksgiving mocktails for nine more for the table.

Steps

Rocks glass · Rosemary sprig, fresh cranberries and an orange wheel

  1. Make the rosemary syrup: warm 120 ml (½ cup) water and 100 g (½ cup) sugar with two rosemary sprigs, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Take it off the heat, leave it 15 minutes, then strain. It keeps two weeks in the fridge.
  2. Fill a shaker with ice. Add the cranberry juice, non-alcoholic gin alternative, orange juice, lime juice and rosemary syrup.
  3. Shake hard for about 10 seconds, then strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice.
  4. Top with ginger beer. Garnish with a rosemary sprig, a few cranberries and an orange wheel.

Make it yours

Cranberry sparkler

Skip the gin alternative and the ginger beer. Shake the cranberry, orange, lime and syrup, strain into a flute, and top with a dry non-alcoholic sparkling wine.

By the pitcher

For eight, stir 720 ml (3 cups) cranberry juice, 360 ml (1½ cups) gin alternative, 240 ml (1 cup) orange juice, 80 ml (⅓ cup) lime juice and 120 ml (½ cup) rosemary syrup in a pitcher and chill. Pour over ice and top each glass with ginger beer.

No syrup, no shaker

Build it in the glass over ice: cranberry juice, orange juice and a squeeze of lime, topped with ginger beer. The ginger beer brings the sweetness.

Common questions

How do you make a cranberry mocktail?

Shake cranberry juice, a non-alcoholic gin alternative, orange juice, lime juice and rosemary syrup with ice. Strain over fresh ice, top with ginger beer, and garnish with rosemary, cranberries and an orange wheel.

Which cranberry juice should I use?

100% cranberry juice is very tart and makes a drier, grown-up drink. Cranberry juice cocktail is already sweetened, so use less syrup or skip it.

Can I make it without the gin alternative?

Yes. Leave it out and add a little more cranberry juice. The gin alternative adds a botanical backbone, but the drink still works without it.

Can I make it sparkling?

Yes. Skip the gin alternative and the ginger beer, strain into a flute and top with a dry non-alcoholic sparkling wine.

Can I make a big batch for Thanksgiving?

Yes. Mix everything except the ginger beer in a pitcher and chill it. Pour over ice and top each glass with ginger beer as you serve.

How to serve & pair

Serve cold, over ice, in a rocks glass, or in a flute for the sparkling version.

Good with roast turkey, a cheese board, and anything with orange or sage.
