About Hemp & Root

The Pathfinder Hemp & Root in 700 mL, a non-alcoholic spirit in the register of an Italian amaro.

Clove and cinnamon sit over bitter wormwood on the nose. The palate is woodsy and bittersweet — rhubarb and raisin with citrus and gingerbread — finishing on juniper and licorice. It is bitter enough to hold its ground in a drink built around it rather than disappearing into the mixer.

About The Pathfinder

Everything from this producer

A Pacific Northwest brand making a non-alcoholic spirit in the register of an Italian amaro.

The Pathfinder arrived in 2021 out of the Pacific Northwest, and it did not set out to stand in for anything in particular. Most of the category picks a target — a gin, a whiskey, a Campari — and works back toward it. This one took the apothecary shelf and the pioneering of the American West as its reference and built something that answers to neither.

What came out is closest to an amaro: bittersweet, herbal, bitter enough to hold its ground in a drink built around it. Bartenders reach for it the way they would reach for an amaro or a sweet vermouth, which is unusual for a bottle with nothing in it.

It has had a cult following and periodic scarcity almost from the start, which tells you more about the drink than any tasting note does.

Common questions

What is it made from?
Hemp, fermented and then distilled in copper pot stills, blended with wormwood, angelica root, ginger, sage, juniper, saffron, orange peel and Douglas fir.
Does it contain THC?
No. The hemp is the base it is fermented from, and there is nothing psychoactive in the bottle.
What do I use it in place of?
Amaro, most directly. It also stands in for sweet vermouth, and it holds up in a spirit-forward drink rather than disappearing.
