More about Leilo
Who they are
Leilo began with a trip. In 2018 its founder, Sol, traveled to the south coast of Fiji and befriended a local named Benji, who introduced him to his family and to the village elders and gathered everyone for a traditional kava ceremony. They mixed from a centuries-old turtle-shell bowl, sipped from coconut shells, and spent hours drinking kava and telling stories.
Sol and Benji stayed in touch after he went home, talking about sharing kava beyond the South Pacific. Several years of research and development followed, and another trip to Fiji, before the first Leilo prototype existed.
What came of it is a canned kava drink in six flavors, from a dry lime and ginger through to a sweeter blackberry and orange. The company is Leilo Inc., and the cans are made for it in New York.

What is kava?
A root from the South Pacific, Piper methysticum, prepared as a drink there for centuries. Leilo builds its cans on an extract of it.
Who should not drink Leilo?
Leilo states that it is not for use by anyone under 18, or by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It also advises against combining it with alcohol, and against driving or operating heavy machinery after drinking it.
Is there a health warning on kava?
Yes. The US Food and Drug Administration advises that a potential risk of rare but severe liver injury may be associated with kava-containing dietary supplements. Leilo carries that advisory and asks anyone with liver problems, or taking medication, to speak to a healthcare professional first, and to stop use and see a doctor if symptoms that may signal liver problems develop.
Do the cans all taste the same?
No. Three are dry — Moscow Mule, Lime Margarita and Piña Colada, none with added sugar. Tangerine Mango, Raspberry Hibiscus and Blackberry Orange are sweetened with cane sugar and are rounder.
