Should You Drink Non-Alcoholic Spirits Neat? Which Ones to Sip and Which to Mix

Most non-alcoholic spirits are made for mixing. Which bottles are made to sip, why, and how to sip one well.

Should You Drink Non-Alcoholic Spirits Neat?

Most non-alcoholic spirits aren’t made to be drunk neat. Without alcohol there’s no heat or weight to carry the flavor, so poured straight they taste concentrated and thin; brands like Seedlip and Ritual say so themselves and build their bottles for mixing. A few are made to sip: Almave Ámbar, Mahala Botanical Amber, Three Spirit Nightcap and Aplós hold up neat or over ice. Here’s which is which, and how to sip one.

Why most aren’t made for neat

In a regular spirit, alcohol does a lot of the work: it carries aroma, adds weight on the tongue and brings the warmth you feel on the finish. Most non-alcoholic spirits start from water and botanical extracts, with the flavor concentrated so it holds up once mixed. Poured neat, that concentration comes through and the body feels thin. Seedlip describes its intended serve as two ounces over ice topped with tonic, and Ritual says its spirits are built to be mixed, not sipped.

How to sip a non-alcoholic spirit

Pour less

Start with 1 to 1.5 oz; the flavor is concentrated.

Add one large cube

A big cube chills it slowly and softens it without watering it down fast.

Use a tasting glass

A rocks glass or a tulip-shaped glass gathers the aroma.

Garnish lightly

A twist of orange or lemon peel over the glass adds the lift alcohol would.

If yours is built for mixing

Give it a mixer and it does what it was made for. A gin-style spirit with tonic, a whiskey-style with ginger ale or cola, an agave spirit with grapefruit soda. For the best of each, see our guides to non-alcoholic gin, whiskey and tequila, or Little Saints vs Ghia vs Seedlip. Once a bottle is open, here’s how long it keeps.

Common questions

Can you drink non-alcoholic spirits neat?

Some, but most are made for mixing. Almave Ámbar, Mahala Botanical Amber, Three Spirit Nightcap and Aplós hold up neat or over ice; Seedlip, Ritual and Little Saints are built for cocktails and highballs.

Why do non-alcoholic spirits taste thin on their own?

Alcohol carries aroma, adds weight and brings warmth. Without it, a spirit built from water and botanical extracts tastes concentrated and light-bodied unless it's mixed.

What's the best non-alcoholic whiskey to sip?

Mahala Botanical Amber has enough weight to stand up neat, and Almave Ámbar, an agave spirit, is built for sipping over one large cube.

Can you drink Seedlip neat?

It isn't made for it. Seedlip's intended serve is two ounces over ice topped with tonic or another mixer.
