Non-Alcoholic Merlot

Merlot ripens earlier than Cabernet and carries softer tannin, giving plum and black cherry with a rounded edge. It is the most planted grape in Bordeaux and the one usually poured first at a table.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Merlot an easy place to start with red?

One of the easiest. Plush fruit, gentle tannin and nothing to negotiate — it pours well on its own and goes with most of what is on the table. If you are pouring red for people who mostly drink white, this is the one to open.

Is there a good non-alcoholic Merlot?

Merlot is a sensible first red to try, because plush fruit and soft tannin leave less for the alcohol to have been carrying. It reads rounder than a Cabernet and asks nothing of the drinker.

What temperature should a dealcoholized Merlot be?

Cooler than room temperature, around 55°F to 60°F. Warm, it reads flat and slightly sweet, since there is no alcohol lifting the aroma. Twenty minutes in the refrigerator before pouring makes a visible difference.
