Who they are

Theo, Alex and Marcel Giesen left Germany for New Zealand in the early 1980s and planted their first vines in Canterbury in 1981. Four decades on, the winery they built is one of the country's larger family-owned producers, with its home in Marlborough and fruit drawn from Waipara and Hawke's Bay as well.

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is what the family became known for, and it stayed the reference point for everything that followed. The three brothers still run the business between them.

The 0% range arrived in 2020 and sits alongside the estate wines rather than apart from them, with a winemaking team of its own.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who are Giesen?

Three brothers — Theo, Alex and Marcel Giesen — who came from Germany to New Zealand in the early 1980s. The winery is in Marlborough.

Is Giesen 0% completely alcohol-free?

No. Each wine contains not more than 0.5% alcohol by volume, the level US law sets for a non-alcoholic drink. That is about what occurs naturally in fruit juice.

How does Giesen take the alcohol out?

Spinning cone. The wine is made at full strength first, then the aroma is drawn off at low temperature, the alcohol removed, and the aroma returned. Doing it cold is what keeps the varietal character; heat is what flattens a dealcoholized wine.

Where does the fruit come from?

Marlborough, Waipara and Hawke's Bay, depending on the wine.
