Non-alcoholic smoky margarita mocktail with chili salt rim, lime wedge, and ice in a textured rocks glass

A mezcal margarita mocktail uses a non-alcoholic mezcal alternative instead of tequila. The smoke changes the drink: lime stops being the loudest thing, and it turns savory and almost dry. Ginger adds warmth, a little vermouth adds depth, and a smoked salt rim ties it together.

New to smoky drinks? Start with half mezcal alternative, half tequila alternative, or begin with the classic virgin margarita.

Steps

Rocks glass · Smoked salt rim, lime twist

  1. Rim the glass. Rim a rocks glass with smoked salt and fill it with ice.
Tip: No smoked salt? Flaky salt with a pinch of smoked paprika.
  2. Add everything. Add the mezcal alternative, lime juice, ginger liqueur, vermouth and bitters to a shaker with ice. Add agave if you like it sweeter.
Tip: New to smoke? Use half mezcal, half tequila alternative.
  3. Shake. Shake hard for 10–15 seconds.
Tip: Shake until the shaker is too cold to hold.
  4. Strain and serve. Strain over fresh ice and garnish with a lime twist.
Tip: Twist the peel over the glass so its oils land on the drink.

Make it yours

Half and half

Use 25 ml mezcal alternative and 25 ml tequila alternative. Gentler, and a good first mezcal drink.

Smokier

Rinse the glass with strong lapsang souchong tea before you pour.

Spicy

Muddle a slice of jalapeño first, or follow the spicy margarita.

Smoked salt

Mix flaky salt with a pinch of smoked paprika if you can't find smoked salt.

Common questions

What is a mezcal margarita mocktail?

A margarita made with a non-alcoholic mezcal alternative instead of tequila, so it tastes smoky. This one adds ginger and a little vermouth.

What does non-alcoholic mezcal taste like?

Smoky and savory, with agave and pepper. Almave Humo, Monday Mezcal and Little Saints St. Ember are three styles, from agave-led to herbal.

Do I need the vermouth?

No, but it adds depth and a little sweetness. Without it, add 5 ml more agave.

How do I make smoked salt?

Buy it, or mix flaky salt with a pinch of smoked paprika.

Is it too smoky for a first mezcal drink?

It can be. Start with half mezcal alternative and half tequila alternative.

Is there alcohol in it?

Most mezcal and vermouth alternatives are labeled under 0.5% or 0.0%; check each bottle. Our bitters are labeled 0.0%.

How to serve & pair

Serve over ice in a smoked-salt rocks glass.

Good with grilled meat, mole, charred vegetables and street tacos.
