Elderflower Margarita Mocktail

A virgin margarita with elderflower in place of orange: still lime-led and salted, but lighter and floral.

Non-alcoholic elderflower citrus cocktail with foam and lavender garnish in a coupe glass

Serves

Base

Tequila

Glass

Rocks or coupe glass

Garnish

Half-salt rim, lime wheel or edible flowers

An elderflower margarita mocktail swaps the orange in a classic margarita for non-alcoholic elderflower liqueur. It's still sharp with lime and still salted, but lighter and floral, a good spring and summer drink.

A half-salt rim suits it: you get a salty sip and a sweet one from the same glass.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Salt half the rim of a rocks glass or coupe. Fill a rocks glass with ice, or chill the coupe.
  2. Add the tequila alternative, lime juice and elderflower liqueur to a shaker with ice. Add agave only if you like it sweeter.
  3. Shake hard for 10–15 seconds.
  4. Strain into the glass and garnish with a lime wheel or edible flowers.

Make it yours

Sparkling

Serve tall over ice and top with 60 ml of soda water or a non-alcoholic sparkling wine.

Cucumber

Muddle three slices of cucumber in the shaker first. Very fresh.

Elderflower cordial

Use 15 ml of cordial and skip the agave; it's sweeter than the liqueur.

How to serve & pair

Serve in a half-salted coupe or over ice in a rocks glass.

Good with salads, grilled shrimp, goat cheese or fish tacos.

Common questions

What is an elderflower margarita?

A margarita with elderflower liqueur in place of orange liqueur. This one uses non-alcoholic tequila and non-alcoholic elderflower liqueur.

Do I still need agave?

Often not; the elderflower liqueur is sweet. Taste it first and add up to 10 ml if you want it sweeter.

Can I use elderflower cordial?

Yes. Use 15 ml of cordial and leave out the agave.

Why only half a salt rim?

So each sip can be salty or not. Salt sharpens the lime; without it, the floral side comes forward.

Shake or stir?

Shake. Citrus drinks need the air and dilution from a hard shake.

Is it alcohol-free?

Giffard's elderflower liqueur and most tequila alternatives are labeled under 0.5% or 0.0%; check each bottle.
