Glass

Rocks glass or margarita glass

Salt rim and lime wheel

A virgin margarita is non-alcoholic tequila, fresh lime and agave syrup, shaken with ice and poured into a salt-rimmed glass. Lime and agave do what they always do; the tequila alternative is what turns it from limeade into a margarita, so pick one with real agave flavor. our guide to the best non-alcoholic tequila compares them.

This is the base for every margarita on the site. Make it once as written, then try the spicy, berry, elderflower or smoky versions below. Rather buy one ready-made? See canned and ready-to-drink margaritas.

Make it yours

Spicy margarita

Ginger liqueur and a chili-salt rim; add jalapeño for real heat. Get the spicy margarita.

Berry margarita

Grenadine and berries for a red, fruitier drink. Get the berry margarita.

Elderflower margarita

Elderflower instead of orange: floral and lighter. Get the elderflower margarita.

Smoky mezcal margarita

A mezcal alternative and a smoked salt rim. Get the smoky margarita.

Frozen

Blend everything with a cup of ice until smooth. Add an extra 5 ml agave, since cold dulls sweetness.

Common questions

What is a virgin margarita?

A margarita without alcohol: non-alcoholic tequila, fresh lime juice and agave syrup, shaken with ice and served with a salt rim.

Can I make a virgin margarita without non-alcoholic tequila?

Yes, with lime, agave and a little orange juice, but it tastes like a limeade. A tequila alternative adds the agave and pepper notes that make it a margarita.

What's the best non-alcoholic tequila for a margarita?

One with clear agave flavor, such as Almave Blanco, Ritual Zero Proof Tequila or Seedlip Notas de Agave (labeled 0.0%). Our tequila guide compares them.

Why does my virgin margarita taste flat?

Usually bottled lime juice, too little shaking, or too much agave. Use fresh lime, shake until the tin is frosty, and add a pinch of salt.

Can I make a pitcher of margaritas?

Yes. Mix the tequila alternative, lime and agave without ice, chill, then pour over ice and stir, or shake each drink to order.

Do virgin margaritas have alcohol?

Without a spirit, none. Most tequila alternatives are labeled under 0.5%, some 0.0%; check the bottle. Our orange bitters are labeled 0.0%.
