Black Manhattan Mocktail

Whiskey alternative, herbal amaro and bitters, stirred and served up — the most grown-up drink on this list.

Black Manhattan non-alcoholic cocktail with Ritual Whiskey Alternative, Pathfinder Hemp & Root, and All The Bitter Aromatic Bitters

Time

Base

Whiskey

Glass

Coupe or martini glass

A Black Manhattan swaps the usual sweet vermouth for amaro, and the result is darker, drier and more interesting. Without alcohol it lives or dies on the amaro, which is doing most of the heavy lifting. Get that right and this is the drink that convinces sceptics.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Fill a mixing glass with ice.
  2. Add non-alcoholic whiskey and amaro-style ingredient.
  3. Add 3–4 dashes aromatic bitters.
  4. Stir gently for about 20–30 seconds until well chilled.
  5. Strain into a chilled coupe glass.
  6. Garnish with a cherry or expressed orange peel.

Make It Yours

Sweeter

Swap half the amaro for non-alcoholic vermouth. Closer to a standard Manhattan, easier going.

Colder

Stir 30 seconds rather than 20. Dilution is a feature here, not a flaw.

With a twist

Orange peel instead of the cherry. Brighter, and it suits the amaro.

How to Serve & Pair

Serve this Black Manhattan mocktail well chilled in a coupe glass to highlight its bold aromas and spirit-forward structure. This alcohol-free cocktail pairs beautifully with:

  • dark chocolate desserts
  • charcuterie boards
  • aged cheeses
  • roasted nuts
  • rich desserts

Perfect for after-dinner cocktails, evening gatherings, or slow sipping by the fire.

Common Questions

What makes it 'black'?

The amaro. A standard Manhattan uses sweet vermouth; swapping in something bitter and herbal darkens the whole drink.

Should I shake or stir?

Stir. Nothing here is cloudy or citrus-based, and shaking would aerate it into something thinner.

Why does mine taste harsh?

Probably under-stirred. This needs proper dilution to round out — twenty seconds minimum, and the glass should frost.

Can I skip the bitters?

You can, but they're what ties the whiskey and amaro together. Three dashes is not much to ask.
