About Reserve Red

The Reserve Red began with something found rather than planned. A 2015 Petite Sirah had been sitting in French and American oak barrels for years, close to forgotten, and it came out carrying the berry depth and developed oak that only that much time gives.

Sovi blended it against young 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon — 52 percent Cabernet to 48 percent Petite Sirah — which put back the freshness and the structure the older wine had spent. Both come off a single estate in the Clarksburg AVA. It is fermented in stainless steel, and the alcohol distilled out at the end.

Boysenberry, plum and cassis with warm baking spice behind them, supple tannins and a long finish. Pour it with filet mignon, a roasted leg of lamb, or a mushroom risotto.

A Napa husband-and-wife pair making alcohol-free wine from California fruit bought direct from the grower.

Sovi started in Napa in 2020. Julia and Alex Littauer met working at a large wine company there, went to business school together, and came back with a single idea: that a wine with the alcohol taken out deserved the same fruit and the same care as one with the alcohol left in. Julia is a certified sommelier.

The name is two halves. So, meaning to a great extent, and vi, from vinous — a great fondness for wine. It reads as a description of the founders before it reads as a label.

What separates them is where they stand in the process. Sovi buys direct from growers in California and is there from bud break through harvest and fermentation, with the alcohol gently distilled out at the very end. The wine is made first, and made as wine; the removal is the last step rather than the starting point.

Three bottles carry the range. A Chenin Blanc off Heringer Estates in the Clarksburg AVA, a red, and a skin-contact sparkling orange they call The Wild Child.

New to Non-Alcoholic Red Wines?

Both routes exist in this category: some reds are fermented as wine and then dealcoholized, others never fermented at all. The Process line on this page says which. Origin and grape still shape the wine the way they always did — Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo keep their grip, Merlot and Garnacha land softer — and the alcohol figure is worth reading, since 0.0% and under 0.5% are not the same thing.
