About Garden 108

A case of six Garden 108 at 700 mL.

Rooted in memories of eating fresh peas straight from the pod. Peas and hay with hops, rosemary, thyme and spearmint.

Herbal and green the whole way through, and it holds its shape in a Martini. Distilled, not fermented — each botanical is macerated and copper-pot distilled on its own before the blend is made, which is why the peas read as peas rather than as a green note.

Botanicals: Peas, hay, hops, rosemary, thyme and spearmint.

About Seedlip Drinks

Built from a 1651 book on distillation, in a cottage, with a copper still and home-grown herbs.

Seedlip started in 2014 in Ben Branson’s cottage in the British countryside, with a small copper still, herbs from his own garden, and a book. The book was The Art of Distillation, published in 1651, which describes distilled remedies made without any alcohol in them at all — and that turned out to be the idea nobody had picked up in three and a half centuries.

What came of it takes six weeks a batch. Every ingredient is macerated and copper-pot distilled on its own before anything is blended, which is slower than making one distillate from a basket of botanicals and is the reason Garden 108 tastes of peas rather than of green. Then blending, filtration, and bottling in England.

There are four, and they go in different directions rather than being four shades of one idea. Garden 108 is peas and hay with rosemary, thyme and spearmint. Grove 42 is three kinds of orange over lemongrass and ginger, with a sansho peppercorn prickle. Spice 94 is Jamaican allspice and cardamom over oak and cascarilla, and finishes long and bitter. Notas de Agave is prickly pear, lime and agave with vanilla and damiana flower.

No sugar and no sweetener in any of them, which is the harder way to make something taste of anything.

New to Gin?

Juniper is the requirement; everything else is the maker's argument. The ingredient list is where you see it, and a longer botanical bill usually means more to taste once it is long and cold.

Common questions
What does Seedlip Garden 108 taste like?
It is the green one — peas and hay over spearmint, rosemary and thyme, grown from English garden botanicals. Seedlip does not imitate gin — the botanicals are distilled individually and blended, so it reads as its own thing rather than as a copy.
Which Seedlip should I buy, and why Garden 108?
Garden 108 is the herbaceous one and the closest of the four Seedlips to a London dry in a gin and tonic. Grove 42 is the citrus one, Spice 94 the warm one, and Notas de Agave the smoky one.
Can I drink Seedlip Garden 108 neat?
Not really — Seedlip is built to be mixed and says so. Two fl oz over ice topped with tonic or a premium mixer is the intended serve. Poured neat the botanicals are concentrated and there is no alcohol carrying weight on the palate, so the body reads thin.
Is there any sugar or sweetener in it?
None of either. Seedlip states sugar-free and sweetener-free, and the declaration is four items long: water, natural botanical distillates and extracts, potassium sorbate as a preservative and citric acid. Seedlip publishes no nutrition panel, so beClink stores no calorie figure rather than an estimated one.
