About Whiskey

Ritual's non-alcoholic whiskey alternative, made in the United States. Filtered water, cane sugar, natural flavors, xanthan gum, citric acid, caramel color and preservatives.

Toasted spice, oak and smoke on the nose. The palate carries vanilla and oak with stone fruit and caramel, and finishes on a warmth that stands in for the heat of alcohol. It is the fullest-bodied bottle in the range.

It replaces whiskey one for one in an Old Fashioned, Whiskey Sour, Manhattan or highball.

Gluten-free, and free of peanuts and tree nuts. Under 0.5% ABV. Made for mixing rather than drinking neat. Good for twelve weeks after opening.

About Ritual Zero Proof

A Chicago brand that builds the bite of a spirit from botanicals instead of taking alcohol out of one.

Ritual Zero Proof starts from the opposite end to most of the shelf. Rather than making a spirit and stripping the alcohol out, the bottles are built from botanical flavors upward, so nothing is removed at the end. That is why the range is described as alternatives rather than as gin, whiskey or rum: each is designed to stand in for its counterpart pour for pour in a cocktail.

The hard part, by their own account, is the burn — the heat that alcohol gives a drink and that a botanical blend has no obvious way to imitate. Ritual say recreating it is the difficult trick at the center of what they make, and it is the one thing about their process they decline to explain.

The brand is owned by Diageo North America. The range runs to five bottles: a gin, a whiskey, an agave spirit, a rum and an aperitif, each made for mixing rather than for drinking neat.

New to Whiskey?

Most of what people want from whiskey — vanilla, char, dried fruit — comes from the barrel rather than the spirit, and that part transfers. Producers differ on how they replace the warmth; the ingredient list shows whether it is spice, capsicum, or nothing at all.

Common questions
Which Ritual is closest to the real thing?
The Whiskey is the fullest-bodied of the five and the one that most convinces in a stirred drink. It carries vanilla and oak with stone fruit and caramel, and finishes on a warmth that stands in for the heat of alcohol. It holds its shape under bitters and ice rather than disappearing.
Can I drink Ritual Whiskey neat?
Not really, and Ritual say so themselves. These are built to be mixed, not sipped. Poured neat the flavor is concentrated and the body is thin without ice and a mixer to open it up. In a pinch, lengthen it with sparkling water.
What are the botanicals listed on the Ritual Whiskey bottle?
They are flavor notes, not ingredients. Ritual say this plainly: the botanicals printed on the front describe what the bottle tastes of, while the actual declaration is filtered water, natural flavors, cane sugar and preservatives. Nothing is distilled and nothing is removed — the flavor is built up rather than stripped out.
How long does Ritual Whiskey last once opened?
Twelve weeks from opening. It does not need refrigerating, though a cold bottle mixes better. That is far longer than a dealcoholized wine, which is usually a matter of days.
