About Gin

Ritual's non-alcoholic gin alternative, made in the United States. Filtered water, natural flavors, cane sugar, xanthan gum, citric acid and preservatives. It is built from botanical flavors rather than distilled from a spirit, so nothing is removed at the end.

Lively botanicals over bright citrus on the nose. The palate is crisp, with cucumber and juniper behind a clean bite that holds up under tonic rather than washing out.

It replaces gin one for one in a Gin and Tonic, Gimlet, Negroni or Cosmopolitan, and can take a vodka role in a Bloody Mary.

Gluten-free, and free of peanuts and tree nuts. Under 0.5% ABV. Made for mixing rather than drinking neat. Good for twelve weeks after opening.

About Ritual Zero Proof

A Chicago brand that builds the bite of a spirit from botanicals instead of taking alcohol out of one.

Ritual Zero Proof starts from the opposite end to most of the shelf. Rather than making a spirit and stripping the alcohol out, the bottles are built from botanical flavors upward, so nothing is removed at the end. That is why the range is described as alternatives rather than as gin, whiskey or rum: each is designed to stand in for its counterpart pour for pour in a cocktail.

The hard part, by their own account, is the burn — the heat that alcohol gives a drink and that a botanical blend has no obvious way to imitate. Ritual say recreating it is the difficult trick at the center of what they make, and it is the one thing about their process they decline to explain.

The brand is owned by Diageo North America. The range runs to five bottles: a gin, a whiskey, an agave spirit, a rum and an aperitif, each made for mixing rather than for drinking neat.

New to Gin?

Juniper is the requirement; everything else is the maker's argument. The ingredient list is where you see it, and a longer botanical bill usually means more to taste once it is long and cold.

Common questions
Does Ritual Gin taste like gin?
It carries the juniper and the bite, which is the part most alcohol-free gins miss. Expect lively botanicals over bright citrus, then cucumber and juniper behind a clean edge that holds up under tonic instead of washing out. What it does not have is the warmth alcohol gives on the finish.
Can I drink Ritual Gin neat?
Not really, and Ritual say so themselves. These are built to be mixed, not sipped. Poured neat the flavor is concentrated and the body is thin without ice and a mixer to open it up. In a pinch, lengthen it with sparkling water.
What are the botanicals listed on the Ritual Gin bottle?
They are flavor notes, not ingredients. Ritual say this plainly: the botanicals printed on the front describe what the bottle tastes of, while the actual declaration is filtered water, natural flavors, cane sugar and preservatives. Nothing is distilled and nothing is removed — the flavor is built up rather than stripped out.
How long does Ritual Gin last once opened?
Twelve weeks from opening. It does not need refrigerating, though a cold bottle mixes better. That is far longer than a dealcoholized wine, which is usually a matter of days.
