About Jungle Bird Set

The Jungle Bird is the tiki drink that bitterness rescued — pineapple and lime on one side, dark rum and a bitter aperitivo on the other. Without the bitter half it is just fruit punch, which is why most non-alcoholic versions fall flat. This set is the two bottles that hold it together.

Lyre's Jungle Bird Set — two 700 mL bottles: the Dark Rum Alternative and Italian Orange.

Dark Rum Alternative, previously Dark Cane, brings molasses and caramel with baking spice behind them. Italian Orange is the counterweight — blood orange and ruby grapefruit with maraschino sweetness and a persistent dry pith bitterness.

How to build it. Shake both with pineapple juice, fresh lime and a little sugar syrup, then pour over crushed ice. Fresh pineapple juice makes a noticeable difference here; the foam on top comes from the juice, not from anything you add.

Apart from the Jungle Bird, the rum makes a dark and stormy and the Italian Orange makes a spritz. Refrigerate after opening and drink within twelve weeks.

Named after the Australian lyrebird, the world's greatest mimic — which is the whole idea.

Mark Livings and Carl Hartmann founded Lyre's in Australia in 2019, setting out to build a range that echoed the classic spirits rather than inventing new flavors.

The name is the method. The lyrebird imitates whatever it hears — other birds, a camera shutter, a chainsaw — and the range is built the same way, each bottle answering a spirit a bartender already knows how to use. That is why the labels say Gin Alternative and Dark Rum Alternative rather than inventing a word for what is in them.

The bottles carry the Social Animals, a cast of characters drawn one to a liquid. The range now runs from the spirits through a sparkling Classico to canned cocktails, and the company sells in more than sixty countries.
