About Le Petit Étoilé Chardonnay

Le Petit Étoilé is the Maison Chavin range that is never fermented and never gets sulfites or preservatives. The Pierre Zéro bottles beside it are made as wine and have the alcohol taken back out; these are built without it from the start.

The Chardonnay is cold-macerated and pressed to draw out what the grape has to give, rather than vinified. It was a range built for French bistros before it was a range on a shelf.

Four bottles make it up: this Chardonnay, a rosé, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a sparkling.

About Pierre Chavin

The Béziers house behind nine alcohol-free ranges, sold in more than sixty countries.

Maison Chavin works out of Béziers, in the Languedoc, and makes alcohol-free wine at a scale almost nobody else does — nine separate ranges rather than one, sold in more than sixty countries.

The division that matters to anyone buying runs underneath the names. Some ranges are made as wine and have the alcohol taken back out at the end. Others are never fermented at all, built instead from grape juice, infusions of oak and grape seed, and long maceration, so there is no alcohol to remove. Pierre Zéro, the flagship and the oldest of them, is the first kind. ÔPIA and Le Petit Étoilé are the second.

That split is also where the sulfites fall. Le Petit Étoilé is made without preservatives or sulfites and was built for French bistros; the Pierre Zéro bottles declare sulfites on the label. Two answers to two different questions, from one house.

The grapes are the French standards — Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot — and the bottles come full-size and in smaller formats for one.

New to Non-Alcoholic White Wines?

Grape and sweetness do the work. Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling stay bright and cutting; Chardonnay is rounder. The sugar figure is what separates crisp from soft, and it is on the page.

Common questions
How does Le Petit Étoilé differ from Pierre Zéro?
Two ways. Étoilé is never fermented rather than having the alcohol removed at the end, and it is made without sulfites or preservatives, which the Pierre Zéro bottles declare.
What does sulfite-free actually mean here?
That none are added. Grapes carry a trace of their own, and a label only has to declare sulfites above a threshold, so the claim is about what goes in rather than a reading of zero.
