About Triple Sec

The orange liqueur a margarita needs, made without alcohol — which matters more than it sounds, because triple sec is the ingredient most alcohol-free margarita recipes quietly leave out.

Giffard have been making liqueurs in Angers since 1885, and the non-alcoholic range is built the same way as the rest: fruit and plant maceration, then infusion. The result is bitter-sweet orange peel rather than orange squash, which is what lets a drink taste constructed instead of mixed.

Use it anywhere a recipe calls for triple sec or Cointreau, in the same measure.

About Giffard France

A Loire Valley liqueur house founded by a pharmacist in 1885, still run by his descendants.

In the heatwave of 1885 the owner of the Grand Hotel in Angers asked the pharmacist next door for something to relieve his guests. Émile Giffard had been studying mint, and what he handed back was a clear liqueur steam-distilled from Mitcham peppermint. He named it Menthe-Pastille after the mint sweets of the day, and within the year he had turned the pharmacy into a distillery.

Maison Giffard has stayed in the family since — five generations now, working from Avrillé just outside Angers, drawing fruit and botanicals from the orchards of the Loire Valley.

The alcohol-free range came out of the same room and the same fruit as the liqueurs, and the family were explicit that it had to be made the Giffard way rather than bought in.

New to Liqueur?

A liqueur is flavor plus sugar, and with no alcohol the sugar carries more of the weight. That makes the per-serving sugar figure the number to read here, more than anywhere else on the site.

Common questions
Can I substitute it one-for-one for Cointreau?
Yes, in the same measure. It will read a little less sweet and carry no alcohol warmth, so taste before you adjust.
What cocktails is it for?
Margaritas first, then cosmopolitans, sidecars and anything asking for orange liqueur.
Does it need refrigerating?
Once opened, yes.
