About Elderflower Liqueur

Giffard Elderflower Alcohol Free in 700 mL, made by maceration rather than dissolved from sugar.

Floral on the nose with lychee and a note of saffron; delicately floral on the palate, dried blossom and fresh lychee over soft citrus, the acidity held in check. It carries much less sugar than an elderflower syrup, which means you can pour more of it into a drink before it flattens.

About Giffard France

A Loire Valley liqueur house founded by a pharmacist in 1885, still run by his descendants.

In the heatwave of 1885 the owner of the Grand Hotel in Angers asked the pharmacist next door for something to relieve his guests. Émile Giffard had been studying mint, and what he handed back was a clear liqueur steam-distilled from Mitcham peppermint. He named it Menthe-Pastille after the mint sweets of the day, and within the year he had turned the pharmacy into a distillery.

Maison Giffard has stayed in the family since — five generations now, working from Avrillé just outside Angers, drawing fruit and botanicals from the orchards of the Loire Valley.

The alcohol-free range came out of the same room and the same fruit as the liqueurs, and the family were explicit that it had to be made the Giffard way rather than bought in.

New to Liqueur?

A liqueur is flavor plus sugar, and with no alcohol the sugar carries more of the weight. That makes the per-serving sugar figure the number to read here, more than anywhere else on the site.

Common questions
Is it a substitute for St-Germain?
It is the closest thing without alcohol. Floral and lychee-led, and it works in the same drinks — though it carries a slight peppery finish that St-Germain does not.
Is it a liqueur or a syrup?
A liqueur, made by maceration rather than by dissolving sugar. It carries far less sugar than an elderflower syrup, so you can pour more of it without flattening a drink.
How much should I use?
Around half an ounce is plenty in a spritz. It is assertive, and elderflower gets cloying quickly if you overdo it.
