About Red Blend

Twelve 750 mL bottles of Giesen 0% Red Blend. Crushed blackberry and wild herbs on the nose. Red berries and plum offset by toasted oak, with fine powdery tannins on the finish.

Giesen make the wine at full strength first, from Marlborough fruit, then take the alcohol out with a spinning cone — the aroma is drawn off at low temperature, the alcohol removed, and the aroma put back. It is why the varietal character survives the process. The panel prints 67 calories and 11 g of sugar per 8 fl oz serving, of which 10 g is added.

Giesen state the wine is produced with a milk product and that traces may remain. If dairy is an issue for you, that is the line to read before buying.

Serve chilled. Refrigerate after opening.

About Giesen 0%

A family winery in New Zealand, founded by three brothers from Germany and known above all for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

Theo, Alex and Marcel Giesen left Germany for New Zealand in the early 1980s and planted their first vines in Canterbury in 1981. Four decades on, the winery they built is one of the country's larger family-owned producers, with its home in Marlborough and fruit drawn from Waipara and Hawke's Bay as well.

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is what the family became known for, and it stayed the reference point for everything that followed. The three brothers still run the business between them.

The 0% range arrived in 2020 and sits alongside the estate wines rather than apart from them, with a winemaking team of its own.

New to Non Alcoholic Red Wines?

Both routes exist in this category: some reds are fermented as wine and then dealcoholized, others never fermented at all. The Process line on this page says which. Origin and grape still shape the wine the way they always did — Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo keep their grip, Merlot and Garnacha land softer — and the alcohol figure is worth reading, since 0.0% and under 0.5% are not the same thing.
