About Berry

Ghia Berry in 500 mL, bottled in Los Angeles. Bold, juicy and tart, with smoke underneath.

It is 93 percent juice, the higher of the two Ghia bottles, built on strawberry and black currant with lapsang souchong and chamomile tea running beneath them and cardamom, clove and orange peel at the back. Like the Original it carries no added sugars.

Sparkling with pasta, or on the rocks later in the evening. Refrigerate after opening and drink within three weeks. Contains no alcohol.

About Drink Ghia

A French founder in Los Angeles who set out to make a bitter aperitif rather than an imitation of one.

Mélanie Masarin grew up in France and spent her summers with family near the Mediterranean. She read economics at Brown, worked as a financial analyst, then ran retail and offline experiences at Glossier before leaving to make a drink she could not find.

She wanted a bitter aperitif rather than a substitute for anything. Working with a food scientist, and paying for it out of her savings, she went through dozens of formulations, holding the bitterness while early tasters pushed her toward something sweeter and easier to place. Ghia launched in June 2020 with 1,200 bottles.

The Berry followed, and the bottles are still made in Los Angeles. The name is borrowed from an Italian car designer.

New to Aperitif / Digestif?

Bitterness comes from botanicals — gentian, cinchona bark, citrus peel — and never needed alcohol to work, which is why this category translates directly. What varies is how much sugar balances it, and that figure is here.

Common questions
How does it differ from Ghia Original?
Berry is the bolder and fruitier of the two — strawberry and black currant over smoked tea — and at 93 percent juice it carries far more fruit. The Original is the bitter one.
Can I drink it neat?
Yes. Ghia suggest it on the rocks as a nightcap, or sparkling alongside food.
How long does it keep once opened?
Three weeks, refrigerated, the same as the Original.
