About No. 9 Wine-Inspired

A case of twelve Curious No. 9, Wine-Inspired. Built to fill a wine glass rather than a cocktail glass. Chardonnay grape juice and aronia give it colour and depth; clarified key lime keeps it from going flat; white grapeskin, pine and French oak extracts supply the grip that makes wine taste like wine.

Tartaric acid — the acid grapes carry naturally — sets the finish, and rose extract lifts the nose. Fermented echinacea and South African kanna round it out.

In a wine glass with dinner, particularly anything with mushrooms or roast vegetables. ⚠ It contains California poppy, which which may cause a false positive on a drug test.

Twelve is the case size, and it works out cheaper a bottle than the six. It works out cheaper a bottle than the six.

About Curious Elixirs

Everything from this producer

Booze-free craft cocktails from Brooklyn, built to be sipped slowly rather than swapped in.

Curious Elixirs began in Brooklyn with a question most drinks companies skip: not how to imitate a cocktail, but how to make something worth ordering on its own terms. The answer was to build each recipe the way a bartender builds a drink — real fruit juice concentrates, botanical extracts, bitter roots, salt, heat — and then to number them rather than name them, so the range reads as a set of experiments instead of a lineup of substitutes.

There are ten. A pomegranate Negroni, a spicy pineapple margarita with ancho and jalapeño, a cucumber collins, a blood orange spritz, a cherry and cacao drink built on American oak, a coconut colada, a chardonnay-based sparkler, a bitter digestif poured in two-ounce measures, a wine-inspired red, and a barley lager. Each one carries a botanical the house builds into the recipe rather than adds on top — rhodiola, damiana, ashwagandha, lion’s mane, ginseng.

The New York Times has put them on its best-of list five years running. The house publishes a full panel and a full ingredient list for every drink, including the ones that complicate the sell: which contains gluten, which may pick up a trace from shared machinery, which is best avoided in pregnancy. That is rarer than it should be, and it is why this range is easy to write about accurately.

Others worth knowing

Common questions

Could this affect a drug test?
It might. Curious No. 9 contains California poppy, and notes it may cause a false positive — their comparison is poppy seed muffins, at a lower concentration than eating whole poppy seeds. Worth knowing if you are tested at work.
What makes it wine-inspired?
Chardonnay grape juice concentrate and aronia for colour and depth, then white grapeskin, pine and french oak extracts with tartaric acid — the components that give wine its grip. It is built to fill the same glass as a red rather than to taste like a cocktail.
