About No. 2 Spicy Pineapple Margarita

Six bottles of Curious No. 2, Spicy Pineapple Margarita. Pineapple and lime with real heat behind them. Ancho, jalapeño and red chili extracts build the warmth in layers rather than all at once, and smoked sea salt does what a salted rim does — without the rim.

Organic ginger extract runs underneath, which is where the drink picks up its Dark and Stormy edge, and star anise gives the finish its length. Damiana is the botanical Curious builds into this one.

Over ice, with tacos or anything off a grill. It is the Curious Elixir people reach for on a hot evening, and the heat builds across a glass rather than hitting on the first sip.

Six bottles is two evenings for two people, or one dinner party. It is also the smallest way to buy this drink — Curious does not sell it singly.

About Curious Elixirs

Booze-free craft cocktails from Brooklyn, built to be sipped slowly rather than swapped in.

Curious Elixirs began in Brooklyn with a question most drinks companies skip: not how to imitate a cocktail, but how to make something worth ordering on its own terms. The answer was to build each recipe the way a bartender builds a drink — real fruit juice concentrates, botanical extracts, bitter roots, salt, heat — and then to number them rather than name them, so the range reads as a set of experiments instead of a lineup of substitutes.

There are ten. A pomegranate Negroni, a spicy pineapple margarita with ancho and jalapeño, a cucumber collins, a blood orange spritz, a cherry and cacao drink built on American oak, a coconut colada, a chardonnay-based sparkler, a bitter digestif poured in two-ounce measures, a wine-inspired red, and a barley lager. Each one carries a botanical the house builds into the recipe rather than adds on top — rhodiola, damiana, ashwagandha, lion’s mane, ginseng.

The New York Times has put them on its best-of list five years running. The house publishes a full panel and a full ingredient list for every drink, including the ones that complicate the sell: which contains gluten, which may pick up a trace from shared machinery, which is best avoided in pregnancy. That is rarer than it should be, and it is why this range is easy to write about accurately.

New to Ready-to-Drink Cocktails?

The mixing is already done, which is what you are paying for — convenience, and a balance somebody else already settled. Sugar is the variable that matters, since it is the easiest way to make a canned drink taste finished, and the per-serving figure is on this page. They also take well to a splash of something else if you want more edge.
