About Champagnette

Chateau de Fleur is made in California by Weibel Family Vineyards, and it does something different from most of this shelf.

It is not dealcoholized wine. Chateau de Fleur is made from juice and carbonated, so no alcohol is ever produced and none has to be taken out. It is sweet, and noticeably so — closer to a good sparkling cider than to a brut.

Crisp apple and ripe peach with a gentle citrus lift and a fine bead. Serve it very cold, and pour it with orange juice if you want a mimosa that works for everyone at the table.

About Chateau de Fleur

A California sparkling made from juice rather than wine, by a house that has made bubbles since the 1930s.

Chateau de Fleur is a Champagnette — a sparkling drink made from juice and carbonated, rather than a wine with the alcohol taken out. Nothing is fermented, so nothing has to be removed, and the result is fruit-forward and frankly sweet. Apple and peach with a citrus lift.

It comes from Weibel, a California house with a long history in bubbles. Rudolph Weibel and his son Fred left Switzerland in 1937 and were making sparkling wine in the basement of San Francisco's William Tell Hotel by 1938. In 1946 they bought a hundred acres of neglected vineyard at Mission San Jose that had once belonged to Governor Leland Stanford, and spent the next fifty years there before moving to Lodi.

What that lineage buys this bottle is the look and feel of the real thing — a pale straw pour and a fine, persistent bead — in a drink anyone at the table can have. It is the bottle for a room full of people rather than a glass for one.

New to Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Wines?

Sweetness is the main variable — it is the easiest way to give an alcohol-free sparkling some body, and it swings widely. The sugar per pour is on every product page here. Grape tells you the rest: Chardonnay runs taut and citrus-driven, Muscat and Gewürztraminer floral.

Common questions
Is this dealcoholized wine?
No. It is made from juice and carbonated, so it was never fermented and no alcohol was ever removed.
How sweet is it?
Sweet. It is a juice-based drink rather than a dry wine, so expect something closer to a sparkling cider. That suits a mimosa and suits a toast; it is not a brut substitute.
Does it make a good mimosa?
Yes, and it is one of the better uses for it. Equal parts with orange juice, both very cold.
