About Merlot

Carl Jung Merlot in 750 mL, an alcohol-removed red from Germany made with Merlot grapes. Ruby red, with ripe red fruit on the nose.

Carl Jung has been doing this longer than anyone. In 1907 Dr. Carl Jung patented a process for removing alcohol in the family wine cellar, and the house has worked the same question for more than a century since.

Blackcurrant and cherry lead, with oak and spice behind them. Serve it lightly chilled in a wine glass.

About Carl Jung

The German house that patented taking the alcohol out of wine, in 1907.

Carl Jung is the oldest name in this category by a long way. In 1907 Dr. Carl Jung worked out a way to remove the alcohol from finished wine and patented it, in the family wine cellar. Everything else on the shelf came later — most of it a century later.

The house has worked the same question ever since, from the Rheingau, and now runs it at modern scale. The wines are made conventionally first and the alcohol drawn off afterwards, which is why they read as wine rather than as grape juice.

The range ran through a Merlot, a Chardonnay and a Riesling, each made from the named grape.

New to Non-Alcoholic Red Wines?

Both routes exist in this category: some reds are fermented as wine and then dealcoholized, others never fermented at all. The Process line on this page says which. Origin and grape still shape the wine the way they always did — Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo keep their grip, Merlot and Garnacha land softer — and the alcohol figure is worth reading, since 0.0% and under 0.5% are not the same thing.
