About Riesling

The Riesling is the still white in the BonBon Zero range, and the only one of the five grown in Germany rather than Spain. It is made as wine in full, and the alcohol is taken back out of it afterwards.

It is built around a balance of fruit and acidity, which is what makes it a food wine rather than only something cold in a glass. That acidity is also what carries it against spice, which is not true of most still whites at this end of the shelf.

BonBon is a Korean brand and the wine is German: the idea comes from Seoul, the cellar is in the Rheingau country where the range is produced.

About BonBon Zero

Designed in Seoul, produced by specialists abroad — and the alcohol-free line is made in Germany.

BONBON is a Korean drinks brand, born in Seoul, and the gap between where it is thought up and where it is made is the design rather than an accident of it. The idea, the direction and the look are Korean. The making goes to whoever does it best, wherever they are, which is how one brand carries wine, soju and makgeolli without any of it coming from one place.

The producers it names are the point. Quinta do Ermizio farms by hand in Portugal's Vinho Verde, Azul y Garanza works the wild country of Navarra, and Carl Jung has been making wine without alcohol in the Rheingau since 1907. BONBON brings the vision and leaves the making to people who were already good at it.

Zero is the alcohol-free line, and it follows that pattern exactly: drawn up in Seoul, produced in Germany, from wine vinified in full before the alcohol is taken back out of it. Five bottles — a still Riesling, Merlot and Rosé, and a Blanc de Blancs and Sparkling Rosé with bubbles.

The labels are commissioned the same way as the wine. Jose Miguel Mendez, Hattie Stewart and Gianluca Cannizzo each had a point of view long before BONBON called, and the bottle is treated as a canvas rather than as packaging. It is the first thing anyone notices on a shelf.

New to Non-Alcoholic White Wines?

Grape and sweetness do the work. Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling stay bright and cutting; Chardonnay is rounder. The sugar figure is what separates crisp from soft, and it is on the page.

Common questions
Is it a dry Riesling?
Riesling carries acidity and sugar together, and this one is no exception. The sugar figure is on the nutrition panel on this page — it is not a bone-dry white, and the acidity is what keeps it from reading sweet.
Is it the only German-grown bottle in the range?
Yes. The Riesling fruit is German. The rest of the range is grown in Spain and made into wine in Germany.
