About Drive

A German Pils from a brewery that has been at it since 1817, brewed to the Reinheitsgebot: water, barley malt, hops and hop extract, and nothing else in the kettle. The hops are Hallertauer and the brewery's own Siegelhopfen.

It is fermented in full first and gently dealcoholized afterward, which is why the herbal hop bite and the bready malt survive. Nothing has been added back to stand in for what came out.

Serve it cold and treat it as a Pils: it cuts through salt and fat, and it is dry enough at the finish that the next one is usually already open.

Sold as a case of six 330 mL bottles.

About Bitburger

German Pils from an 1817 brewery. Fully fermented, then gently dealcoholized.

Bitburger has been brewing in the same Eifel town since 1817, which makes the brewery older than the country it sits in. It started as one man’s operation in Bitburg, passed through marriage into the Simon family in the 1840s, and has stayed with them since.

What it makes is Pils, and almost only Pils. That narrowness is the point: a brewery that has poured essentially one beer for two centuries has had a long time to get the bitterness where it wants it, and the Eifel water it draws on has not changed either.

It is one of the largest Pils brewers in Germany and still family-held, a combination that has become rare. In English-speaking markets the brewery puts its beer out under the name Drive.

New to Non-Alcoholic Beer?

Two routes, and they taste different: brewed at full strength then dealcoholized, or fermented so that little alcohol ever forms. Process on this page says which. Removal can thin the hop aroma; restricted fermentation can leave a malty sweetness.

Common questions
Is this the same beer as standard Bitburger Pils?
It is the same Pils, brewed the same way and then dealcoholized at the end rather than brewed to be weak from the start. The brewery has made Pils in Bitburg since 1817 and Drive is what the alcohol-free version is called in English-speaking markets.
What does brewed to the Reinheitsgebot mean here?
Water, barley malt and hops, and nothing else. The German purity law dates to 1516 and Bitburger still brew to it, which is why the ingredient list on this beer runs to four items.
Why bottles rather than cans?
Both exist and hold the same beer. The 330 ml bottle is the German serve and comes six to a case; the 16 oz can is the American one and comes four to a pack.
