About Cabernet and Chardonnay, case of 6

Case of 6 of Ariel — 3 bottles of the Cabernet Sauvignon and 3 of the Chardonnay.

Both are grown on J. Lohr’s estate vineyards in Monterey County and Paso Robles, fermented and barrel-aged as wine, then dealcoholized. The Cabernet is the fuller one: black currant, cherry and chocolate with soft tannins and a dry finish. The Chardonnay runs tropical fruit and ripe apple into butterscotch and a whisper of oak.

Both keep five days once opened, refrigerated.

About Ariel Vineyards

Everything from this producer

The first alcohol-removed wine to beat wines with alcohol at their own competition, in 1986.

ARIEL began because a hotel chain asked. Hyatt noticed its alcohol sales falling and went to J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, who had been making their wines since 1974, and asked whether a wine without the alcohol was possible. The answer arrived in 1985, and it went on to win a Gold Medal against wines with alcohol at the Los Angeles Commercial Wine & Spirits competition. Forty years on, that is still a rare thing.

The method is J. Lohr’s own and they hold the patent on it: reverse osmosis, which separates the alcohol out under pressure rather than with heat, so the aromatics are never cooked off. The grapes come from their sustainably farmed estate vineyards in Monterey County’s Arroyo Seco and in Paso Robles, and the wine is fermented and barrel-aged in full before any of that begins. The oak happens first, which is why the Cabernet has grip and the Chardonnay has a whisper of toast.

The name is Shakespeare’s — Ariel, the ethereal spirit of The Tempest — and in 2024 the bottles were redrawn around it, with botanical illustrations, lighter glass and a screwcap. Two wines: a Chardonnay and a Cabernet Sauvignon.

Common questions

What is in the set?
Both Ariel wines, three bottles of each — the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Chardonnay, each 750 mL.
How different are the two?
Enough to want different glasses and different temperatures. The Cabernet is the fuller of the two at 52 calories and 12 g of carbohydrate per 8 fl oz, served at 60 to 65 °F; the Chardonnay is lighter at 45 and 11, served chilled at 45 to 50 °F.
How is the alcohol removed?
Reverse osmosis, under pressure rather than with heat, and the patent is J. Lohr's own. This is worth stating because it is widely reported wrong: the spinning cone belongs to Sutter Home FRE, not to Ariel. Because the separation happens cold, the aromatics are never cooked off.
Are they alcohol-free?
Not quite, and the difference matters if you are avoiding alcohol entirely. Ariel is dealcoholized rather than never alcoholized, and the label reads under 0.5% ABV — the same trace left in kombucha or a ripe banana. If you need a true 0.0%, Seedlip and Ritual are never alcoholized and Lussory's range is 0.0%.
