About Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet grown on J. Lohr’s sustainably farmed estate vineyards in Monterey County and Paso Robles, fermented and barrel-aged as wine before any alcohol is touched.

The oak ageing happens first, which is why there is grip here rather than just fruit. Black currant, cherry and blueberry on the nose with chocolate behind them; soft tannins and a dry finish. At 60 calories and 15 g of carbohydrate per 8 fl oz, it is fuller than the Ariel Chardonnay.

About Ariel Vineyards

The first alcohol-removed wine to beat wines with alcohol at their own competition, in 1986.

ARIEL began because a hotel chain asked. Hyatt noticed its alcohol sales falling and went to J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, who had been making their wines since 1974, and asked whether a wine without the alcohol was possible. The answer arrived in 1985, and it went on to win a Gold Medal against wines with alcohol at the Los Angeles Commercial Wine & Spirits competition. Forty years on, that is still a rare thing.

The method is J. Lohr’s own and they hold the patent on it: reverse osmosis, which separates the alcohol out under pressure rather than with heat, so the aromatics are never cooked off. The grapes come from their sustainably farmed estate vineyards in Monterey County’s Arroyo Seco and in Paso Robles, and the wine is fermented and barrel-aged in full before any of that begins. The oak happens first, which is why the Cabernet has grip and the Chardonnay has a whisper of toast.

The name is Shakespeare’s — Ariel, the ethereal spirit of The Tempest — and in 2024 the bottles were redrawn around it, with botanical illustrations, lighter glass and a screwcap. Two wines: a Chardonnay and a Cabernet Sauvignon.

New to Non-Alcoholic Red Wines?

Both routes exist in this category: some reds are fermented as wine and then dealcoholized, others never fermented at all. The Process line on this page says which. Origin and grape still shape the wine the way they always did — Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo keep their grip, Merlot and Garnacha land softer — and the alcohol figure is worth reading, since 0.0% and under 0.5% are not the same thing.

Common questions
Does Ariel Cabernet Sauvignon taste like red wine?
Closer to wine than most, and the order of operations is why. The wine is fermented and barrel-aged in full first, and the alcohol comes out afterwards. The oak happens before the dealcoholization, which is where the Cabernet's grip and the Chardonnay's touch of toast come from.
Cabernet or Chardonnay: which Ariel should I pick?
The Cabernet is the one for a table. It runs 60 calories and 15 g of carbohydrate per 8 fl oz against the Chardonnay's 52 and 14, and carries more body and grip. The Chardonnay is the aperitif of the two.
How is the alcohol removed?
Reverse osmosis, under pressure rather than with heat, and the patent is J. Lohr's own. This is worth stating because it is widely reported wrong: the spinning cone belongs to Sutter Home FRE, not to Ariel. Because the separation happens cold, the aromatics are never cooked off.
Is Ariel Cabernet Sauvignon alcohol-free?
Not quite, and the difference matters if you are avoiding alcohol entirely. Ariel is dealcoholized rather than never alcoholized, and the label reads under 0.5% ABV — the same trace left in kombucha or a ripe banana. If you need a true 0.0%, Seedlip and Ritual are never alcoholized and Lussory's range is 0.0%.
